La Família Gitana are a collective of young musicians from Bairro do Fim do Mundo, in Cascais. United not only by blood ties but also by pride and passion for Gypsy music, they came together with the desire to carry their culture and traditions further. The dream began with Ari’s guitar, soon joined by Rui’s guitar, Hugo and BA’s cajóns, Ângelo’s voice, and more recently Moisés on keyboards. Inspired by the legacy of their parents and uncles — with whom they often share the stage — they turned family gatherings into vibrant performances for ever-growing audiences.
Their journey started in December 2016 with the community project Take.it, followed by the Oficina Portátil de Artes, and from then on the stages and audiences multiplied, always with the mission of bringing Gypsy music to new listeners. From Festival Iminente to Festival Política, Meo Sudoeste, Lisboa Mistura, SMUP, CC Olga Cadaval, and the project Música Cigana a Gostar Dela Própria, La Familia Gitana have been proving the power of music to break down prejudice and bring people together.
More recently, they accepted the challenge of poet António Poppe, creating a performance-concert for the BoCA Biennial that blended the poetry of Camões with the energy of Gypsy music — a work presented at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and still unfolding. This is the path of La Familia Gitana: music, culture, and sharing, rooted in tradition yet always open to new artistic and social expressions. Their first official video clips are now out — and the best is yet to come. Olé!
